Shore diving on the coast of NC
NC Shore Diving
Working on this one....the quick and dirty is that there are walk-in wreck diving
opportunities in many places. Expect low viz, and dive during slack (high) tide.
Some wrecks are visible (from the surface/shore) during low tide. You can also
do a channel dive at
Radio Island.
Farb lists many of these in his book. I've personally done the
dive at Radio Island, and tried (once) to find the General Beauregard, but during
high tide (bad move) since it was the only time our schedule would permit...but luckily others have had more luck and instructions are posted on the wrecks page.

At Radio Island (btw Morehead City and Beaufort):
Channel Dive
- Channel dive at Radio Island. Depth ~35fsw with spots further out up to 48fsw.
- Can be a strong current. Experience with this kind of diving
recommended.
- Visibility at this location can range from around 5 feet to over 20.... with
7-10 feet being more common. The rocks are home to blue crabs, stone crabs,
hard corals, soft corals, encrusting sponge, Slippery Dicks, Black Sea Bass,
and during late summer, some tropicals. It's also common to see juvenile
Spade Fish and juvenile Grouper at this site. Small to medium sized sting
rays are not uncommon.
- Best approach for this site is to walk up the beach from the parking
area at the County Park. Enter the water at the fence denoting the military
property boundry. Catch it slightly before slack tide and do a drift dive
along the bottom, riding the incoming tide. Then, when slack
hits, explore the upper portions of the rocks. For a little longer drift and
better treat, pull and glide along the surface using a snorkel to the end of
the island, then descend and drift the bottom on the incoming
tide. (thanks to Bob Decker for this information)
